Thread weaves together encounters between Mônica and Carla, who share a love for stories. When Mônica begins to create an art piece to tell her family history she unwittingly delves into her own memories marked by loss and tragedy. To overcome it she must face her fears but it is much harder than expected. Mônica’s stories begin to resonate in Carla, who must face her own demons as her first pregnancy draws out the shadows of the mother she lost many years ago.

Germinating in Rio and then flowing into the arid Midwest, their different stories become one as they themselves begin to transform and take a journey into the unknown. By observing their past and possible futures, the two friends seek answers to their present lives, realising that the only way to overcome grief and abandonment is by facing it head on and with courage.

The film is co-directed by Carla Shah (The Tomorrow That’ll Come) and artist Mônica Santino.
